You said that "I’m not wanting to migrate tapes every few years." and while you have used the plural of "tape" which would normally imply lots of tapes and more like tape libraries rather than the smaller autoloaders I suspect it would only be a couple of tapes you would have to migrate which wouldn't be too hard if you have say both an 24TB LTO9 and a 96 TB LTO11 drive in your PC and you just copy the contents over to the new tape every two LTO generations like everyone else does and this process is also usually automated anyway.Īs far as "LTO is out due to environmental constraints" the easiest thing to do is just keep them in living areas where the temperatures don't go to extremes either way and also keep them in a hermetically sealed box so they aren't exposed to extreme humidity, and if you are using them when humidity is high on that day then pretty much every air-con I've seen has a dehumidify option. If you can afford to buy an optical drive now you won't have any problems buying an LTO9 drive when it comes out. 500 GB a week then multiplying by 52 gives 26TB so you can probably fit almost a years data on just one tape when LTO9 comes out. LTO if it keeps to its 2-2.5 year release for new generations should see LTO9 come out early next year and that will have 24TB cartridges and since you said that you will be generating approx. LTO8 cartridges are in short supply due to the patent dispute but 6TB LTO7 are $70 and readily available and so are 9TB LTO7 type M ones for the same price. But lets compare both and a bare drive for LTO8 is $3.3K (all prices in USD) whereas optical is reputedly like $6K-$8K.
